Default Speedo

Sorry about being long-winded ahead of time, but I'm kind of stressing out over my whole car ordeal.

To start off, I want to introduce my situation. I'm almost completely new to the mechanics of cars, with this being my first car and all. I've just been going on a lot of what I've read, so I have a general idea of what's going on.
The car isn't even mine yet, I just really want to finish this deal.

My problem is (put simply) - my speedometer doesn't work. The guy who's selling the car brought it to my mechanic to get it checked out. As it turns out, the drive gear broke.

I've been reading other forums and past posts, and got an ALMOST complete idea about what to do to fix this problem. What I've got so far is, to see the gear, you must take the sensor out, which can be done easily without any removing of a transmission.

What I would like to know is, if this is an easy fix and I could do it at home, or if I have to remove the transmission to get to it, which is what the mechanic said. I haven't exactly found a concise answer to this in my search through the forum.

I've got a 1995 Eclipse GS.

And, actually I was mistaken about which part it was. He said something about another gear that the plastic one connects to.

If its that plastic gear(btw what dumb fu*k puts a pice of plastic in a tranny, gotta love mitsu!) I am almost postitive that you need to take the tranny apart. The car will actually run real ****ty with the spedo borke, check a hayns manual.

Let me guess it was an auto. If I am going 55 and put my car into nutral and just sit the car will chill at 1800 r's when I come to a stop "still in nutral" once the spedo hits 0 the r's drop to their regualr range 900. Its because the car uses the spedo sensor to help the car idal... or at least thats in a 5spd.
