tell me what you would do
I own a 96 gs eclipse, and recently have realized i need to fix the oil leak. The rear camshaft gasket is bad and have to replace it. I just was going to upgrade little things if i could while i have the transmission out of it, but what can i do? If you tell me to replace it with a manual tranny i will kill you. If there is nothing i can do don't tell me because it will discourage me in trying to fix my car... just post something good. thankx
why not just fix the problem. Not sure what your are asking. If you mean to build it up or add performance, i would say its not worth it. But to fix it so its in working order, yea thats a good idea
One more thing, what does the gasket for the torque converter look like. I asked for the gasket at autozone and they asked me if it was the front oil pump seal.. What the hell did I get? It is a circular seal. Thank you much.
I hate to ask but are you sure you know what you're doing? If you're not 100% sure, grab yourself the FSM on-line (it's free) and go over it before you tear into your engine/tranny.
You mentioned on your first post that your leaking oil on your camshaft "gasket". If this was the case, why would you remove your tranny; unless you're talking about your rear seal (crankshaft).
There is no gasket for the torque converter. You can't even open it up unless you put a tourch to it. One side bolts up to your flexplate (auto don't have flywheels) and the other end has a stub where the input shaft of your tranny goes in to (it's also the passage for the fluid). I believe the seal is on the input shaft. However, if you're not dripping tranny fluid, why mess with it??

Yeah I'm sure. Dropping the transmission is not hard, I have done it for another car of mine to replace a clutch plate... I'm sure it cant be worse than an manual transmission; although my eclipse is automatic. Yeah sorry the rear crankshaft seal is bad. I purchased a front oil pump seal which is in the torque converter case my bad. I willchange that while I have the transmission out. What do you mean auto's don't have flywheels? Have you seen a transmission before?
Dude, I'm not trying to be an azz, but based on your last 2 posts; you seem lost. I suggest reading up on the FSM or have someone competant help you out.
As for the auto transmission, that piece of stamped steel that is bolted on your crank is known as a flexplate. It's not like your conventional flywheel that you see in a manual tranny application. Ask a mechanic or someone else in this forum and they'll tell you the same.
BTW, the front oil seal is not inside the TC; it's on the oil pump which is located at the front of the motor.
