Default Transmission Issue

so i have a 97 eclipse and when i shift from 1st to 2nd i have to slowly drop it down to 2nd....kinda like shifting into neutral then to 2nd, if i try to just yank it down into 2nd the shifter will stay in 2nd but it doesnt actually go into 2nd, it doesnt grind or anything like that either and if i wanna reverse i pretty much have to slowly pull it back but in this situation it will pop back out of R, anyone have and ideas on what i should check out?????

Do u have any issues w/ any other gears? Check the shift and cables for binding.

it sounds like your tranny has been romped on and the shift locks are worn check you shift linkage and you shifter bushing but the car slipping or popping out of gear tells me the shift lock for reverse is gone second you should pull the console out check for debris that could be blocking the shift as well remember that you are trouble shooting a standard trans which is mechanical and only relies on hydraulic pressure only to engage and disengage the clutch unlike an auto trans which relies on trans fliud to transfer power if you understand the drive train pull the trans and open the case and inspect it if not leave it to a professional ....
