Default Transmission Issue Scratchy Sound?

I have a '98 Eclipse RS. When I shift into 3rd, it makes a scratchy sound. If I pause in nuetral for a second, then shift to 3rd, there is no scratchy sound.

It doesn't effect the cars performance, but its just really annoying hearing that scratchy sound everytime I hit 3rd. The only way to get around that is to pause, then shift.

Mechanic said that I needed a new clutch. I got that done, and the same problem is happening. It only happens when shifting into 3rd.

Has anyone had this experience? Know what is the cause? What can I do? Thanks for the help.

Your mechanic is a ****ing retard. Fire him immediatly and go elsewhere!

Your problem is the syncro in the transmission. They have worn out. What you are hearing is the gears grinding. Not your fault. More than likely, you or a previous owner shifted a little rough one day and ****ed it up. What syncros do is they bring the gear to a complete stop to avoid grinding... when they go... the gear is spinning... and you have the grind when they come together.

Have fun!

But while your at it, you may as well replace that clutch anyway... if the syncro is gone, odds are that the clutch was beat on too.

So, replace "syncros"? How to do that? Where to buy it? How much will it cost?

I'm not really knowledgable about cars, I just drive the thing, that's why so many questions.

Thank you.

Well in that case you cant do it yourself. You have to take it to a tranny shop
