Default transmission issue...I think

I drive a 91 3000GT NA. I have about 155,000 miles, engine rebuild at 120k. Recently, I have had a sound coming from what I believe is the transmission. When I take my foot off the gas, and take the load off the engine, a low pitched humming noise occurs (grinding may be a better description). When I turn to the left or right it will go away, when I brake it will go away. I had it into a shop and they diagnosed it as possibly two things. One being, when you let off the gas something in the transmission/transaxle will "spin backwards", this is wearing and creating the noise (they felt this was the most likely)? The other being the bearings where my front axle inserts into the drivetrain. Can you give me an opinion based on what I have stated?
The other question, if I replace the transmission, is the transmission and transaxle the same thing? If not, do they come as an integrated unit?
Thanks for your assistance.

It is a manual...nonturbo.
I recently found a manual trans out of a 92 3000gt that has 44k miles on it. below $1000, I am contemplating it.[&:]
