What do the clutch packs do?

What do the clutch packs do?
Ok, I know what they do but more specifically I need to know which ones do what.
I have my auto trans apart and from the converter there is one pack, then another, then a larger set of clutches that really aren't in a pack like the others and then the end clutch.... so 4 sets basically. can anyone tell me what each does in that order?
[ol][*]first clutch pack[*]second clutch pack[*]set of clutches not in pack[*]end clutch[/ol]
Also, upon inspection, one of the wave springs is broken.. the one that goes to the set of clutches that isn't really in a pack (number 3 on the list above). There are no pieces missing but it is broken in one place and I can see unusal wear where it sits against the body of that section. What problems would or couldthis cause?
I appreciate your help. This is my first time doing a transmission rebuild.
Oh yeah, could Mitsubishi make life any harder on a guy trying to get parts? Everything I need becomes a problem somehow.
