Default Won't shift help

Hello,
I just bought a 1998 GS from an auction, this is my first Eclipse, anyway the problem is that it won't shift, this is an automatic, it only runs on 1st, also the speedometer doesn't work I don't know if that has anything to do with the shifting problem..., anyway any tips on where or what to check ????

Thx
Andy

Sounds like limp mode. Do the normal checks...fluid, fuses, relays, CPS. If all checks well, then take it to a garage.
Or you can just start changing things, the TCU, like what Paintball suggested, CPS, firewall relays, fluid and filter (that has a major influence on any auto tranny btw), clutch solenoid (yikes), tranny (bigger yikes).

Rule #1 ive learned as being a mechanic with that problem, replace the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). First just make sure its plugged in.
its the cheapest quickest fix, if that doesnt fix it, return the part and say you didnt need it. Then go for a TCM.
When you get it straight be sure to let us know what the problem was.
