A/C Compressor replacement help
I know very little about cars. I have a 2002 Lancer OZ Rally Edition, manual transmission. My buddy who knows about cars took one listen to a sound my engine was making and determined I need to replace my A/C Compressor.
Just a little background, my Engine would make a low sort of rumbling noise, usually when in neutral, and I could feel the engine falter, as well as my A/C running warmer when it happened. Happened once every 30 seconds to once every 2 minutes or so.
Anyway, I've called around to get some quotes, and most I've found are about $800, give or take $100 for the compressor replacement and recharge and labor. That being said, does that price sound correct? I just want to make sure I'm not way over spending.
Also, one of the shops gave me a breakdown: 180 for labor, 325 for aftermarket compressor, OR 550 for stock compressor. They said not to go with the aftermarket even though it's quite a bit cheaper. Are they just yanking my chain, or should I really not go with an aftermarket?
Thanks in advance!
P.S. In the meantime, should I drive around without the A/C turned on just to be safe? I don't want to make it any worse.
