This may end up being more of a question of confirmation rather than a question of concern.

I noticed after driving my new 09 Lancer (that i just got yesterday...woo hoo!) that when it sits idle, the engine fan will kick on for approximately 5 seconds, then it shuts off. After about 5 seconds of it being off, I hear a click, then the fan kicks back on again. This cycle repeats itself. I'm wondering if this is normal (that the fan does not stay on continuously), or if it is something to be concerned about.

 

Is is dependant on the A/C?

 

Hmm, not really sure what you mean by dependent on the A/C? Although, you bringing that up does remind me that the a/c was in fact running at the time.

 

That means that the freon is low : ) 99% sure.

What I mean by dependant, if the A/C is on, it will do it, if the A/C is off, it wont. Make sense?

 

Yeah totally makes sense. Talked to a mechanic at the dealer and he said he thinks it is normal unless it was clicking every 5 seconds. I think he probably means that if the fan didn't kick on it would be a problem. I still suspect it might be a problem though...it's just hard to believe since it's a new car...haha. What are some other symptoms of a low freon level? I'm assuming the a/c probably wouldn't work as efficiently?

maybe its due to the engine temperature sensor.The fan starts to kick in when the sensors sense the heat of the engine and will run for 5mins to cool down the engine.It will stop for awhile and sense the heat of the engine again.This usually applies to new cars.
