My name is Joost and I'm currently residing in Colombia. I just bought my 4th Montero / Pajero last week, a Montero Wagon 3.0 v6 mk1 from 1994.
For as far I know these v6 have a timing belt. As I don't know too much about the history of the car and don't trust what the seller told me, I'd like to have the belt changed.
I went to a repair shop and they did a check, and they told me this car has a CHAIN. After this I called the Mitsubishi dealership over here, and they also told me the 1994 model has a chain.
I'm a bit confused now. Over here in Colombia they made the mk1 model till '97 or so, side by side with the mk2 model. But I can't believe they put a belt in these blocks. Is there a way to check this myself? I'm not familiar with this 3.0 v6 block, nor am I a technical guy, and can't discover any belt or chain for it's hidden behind other parts. Any help would be appreciated, thanks a lot!
I suppose we both are legally insane......as we both own 4 Monteros......all of mine were 94s, and I did just sell one....so down to three.
I have replaced the head gaskets and timing belt and almost everything else in the 94 LS with the 3.0 V6......it definately has a timing belt, not a chain. You really should try to get shop manuals since you own several, and having the correct data is essential.
Here is a pic of the timing belt being installed on the 94 LS:
If you check my posts, you will see more information and pictures on installing the timing belt.
Good afternoon, thanks for the reply. Haha yes it's pretty insane I always wanted the mk1 wagon with the v6. I just sold my mk3 LWB which was a little rusty underneath. The other one is a Pajero 3.5 v6 mk3 SWB and a mk1 hardtop 2.6 (swb) As we speak they're working on the belt of my wagon. I found a garage here in Colombia that knows a bit about these cars. Also doing the bougies, cleaning the lifters, new filters, oil, ... Hope they'll do it well
Yep, I hope they get those "boogie woogies" done right, or you might have some pooglie-wooglie going on when not expected.
Say "Hello" to Juan Valdez for me, and tell him to lighten up a bit on his coffee prices. Ha haaaaa
So, did your new mechanic happen to find any "chains" in your engine?
I just called them and they keep talking about a 'cadenilla', which in my dictionary translates as 'little chain'
They haven't yet completely dismantled the block, so I guess in a few hours they'll discover there's a belt in there. Thrilling stuff!
Mucho gracious senor!
Que esta "cadenilla"? Sounds like something one might find lurking around a Lousianna Bordello.
Let us know what the "little chain" turns out to be.
Haha si señor, 'cadenillas' are generally used in those bordellos. But they just send me a photo from a dismantled V6, and it looks exactly like your photo. Maybe they call these rubbers cadenillas over here, don't know Anyhow, they say this belt looks fine and can last another 25000. For now I believe them. (or maybe they're afraid to do the job)
What they sure will replace is the serpentine / vee belt (is how you call it in the US?) That's fine with me.
OK, they can just replace the serpentine, and 25,000 miles should give you enough mileage to drive up to New Orleans and check-in at a good Bordello where they can replace the Cadenilla......be sure to tip them well for this difficult service. Haa haaaaa, hee-haw.
