Overheated my 96 Eclipse Oil Everywhere
The last two days my car has heated up past half way - not too dangerously close to high - I could turn my heater on and keep it okay till I got to work. I figured it was the thermostat. Today I drove it home and turning the heater on didn't cool down my engine at all and it just blew cold air. It got all the way to high as I pulled into my driveway. We replaced the thermostat and a hose that had cracked from the heat and when I drove it out of the driveway to test it, we noticed there was oil all over under my car. I am pretty sure I killed it. Will I have to replace the engine? How much does that cost? Could it be something else.

RE: Overheated my 96 Eclipse Oil Everywhere
I e-mailed my reply to this but basically yeah without labor around $800 for a new engine. But the extent of the damage MAY not be that much. Need to answer the barrage of ?'s I sent you and see if you can find EXACATLY where the oil poured out from. Also need to know what noises if any the engine made as well as if there was any type of smoke out the tailpipe when it happened?

RE: Overheated my 96 Eclipse Oil Everywhere
1st of all, you've got to find out where the oil is coming form. The 420A is already prone to leaking oil from the headgasket. This will can cause the entire undercarriage to be absolutely soaked with motor oil. Throw in an overheat situation and it'll probably leak worse. On the upside- the new MLS headgasket seems to take care of alot of oil leak issues. On the downside- if by chance you managed to warp the cylinder head (which is unlikely if it's running okay- despite the oil leak)- it CANNOT be resurfaced (as per FSM) and you'll need to purchase a new head.

i have a 420a and i can tell you know, that if you overheated it, then you more than likely blew the head gasket. That is wear the oil is coming from...(should be) I would start looking from thier and see what you can find.
