Default Timing Chain

I was just wondering how important it is to change your timing chain regularly. I haven't heard many people say they changed theirs, yet the car I just bought had its chain replaced after 100,000Km and the previous owner said it'd have to be done again around 200,000Km. Is this completely necessary?

Thank you!
