What is crank walk? What causes it?

 

simply put american mitsubishi messed up, made crankshafts for the 2g turbo dsm's the wrong size, and your crank bearings can wear away an totally mess up your bottom end. If u own one you have a 20-30% of getting crankwalk. More common in awd's due to more stress on the release bearing. I have been unlucky in getting it twice once in a 97 tsi awd, then in my 97 gsx. First you hear a clicking noise when u depress your clutch, then your clutch starts to stick to the floor after a left turn. if u have any of these symptoms be very worried. I took the safe route an swapped for a 1g engine.

So this only happens to turbo models or with all of them, also manual cars or automatics too?

Nobody knows EXACTLY why crankwalk occurs, but a good guess is that the crankshaft was machined slightly out of spec from the factory. Roadrace rebuilt my 1g engine, and told me the engines they fix usually have the crankshaft a tiny bit smaller than theyre supposed to be. The wedge of space between the crank and the bearings grows over time and when the bearings fail stuff starts getting destroyed.
