Default 2002 Mortero Timing Belt

My wifes Montero has 82,000 miles on it. I was told it didn't need a new timing belt until 100,000 miles. Is this true? I truelly do not trust the repair shops that seem to want to rebuild your vehicle from the frame up whenever you take it to them. Timing belts are critical and if this needs to be done then so be it, if not I prefer to wait. It is a very costlly repair. Any one with knowledge about this your advice is appreciated.

The timing belt is recomended to be changed at 60k. The belt is designed to only last till 100k. Anythnig near 100k and it is likely to break.
