97 and 99 dimmer switch

97 and 99 dimmer switch
Can anyone tell me if a 97 and 99 dimmer switch is different? I was told they were.
I bought a 99 dimmer switch for my 97 eclipse gst and when I plugged it in it shorted out instantly. I shorted out the stock one while installing my radio. So I think?
My only two guesses are that I have a short in the wire harness OR the replacement 99 dimmer switch isnt interchangeable with a 97 switch????
