Default Bad catalytic converter

I have a 2006 eclipse 2.4 engine with 75k miles the check engine light is on and the code is bad catalytic converter i don't see how this part is bad and why is so dificult to find one, and expensive i also notice that there are 2 oxygen sensors,
will it help any if i replace them first ? in my supra we use a resistor so the sensor don't turn on the engine light because i don't have a catalytic converter, can i do the same in a 2006 eclipse ?
thank you

in my 01 eclipse, i knocked out the catalitic converter, they make a sensor to eliminate the rear o2 sensor or bank 2 sensor, but the front o2 sensor is neccesary to control air fuel mixture, this is the sensor before the catalytic converter. i havent had any problems with the cat knocked out so far and i have 175k on my engine, with obx muffler and aem intake its got a nicer sound but is only a tempory fix for lack of money. the o2 sensors have ceramic inside and are fairly easily sheared from heat or use, they only work after reaching a certain temp also, so testing one isnt impossible but requires a torch.. hope any of this helped
