My 02 diamante had a transmission from my 03 with a new wavy washer put in.






That was working fine for 20k or so over the last 2 yrs and suddenly started some bizzare behaviour.

In dec it was not going into 1st but getting into reverse well.
I parked it for a month and in jan it would randomly go into 1st but never into reverse.
Then 5 months of it being parked in a shop where they didn't do anything (I asked them to try swapping the relays under the cup holder - which they didn't) I towed it to another shop 100 miles away in my new home town.


They said it has a "incorrect gear ratio" code. I think it was 042 or some like that.


However when driving it, it gets into 1st just fine. And 99% of the time it will make a good shift from 1-2 especially so if you pre empt the shift by accelerating in 1st and taking you foot off the gas till it gets into 2nd and accelerating gently till you are clear.


Problem is worse when the transmission is cold. But not always gone when hot.


Could someone tell me what could be happening here ? I am very reluctant to rebuild the transmission with 195k on the car. I may do another junkyard transmission but get an 02 and do a wavy on it.
