Default Running a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse Without an Alternator Belt

Hi everyone,

I need some advice on the following situation. I was driving to a friends house when my alternator belt slipped off. I heard it come off and then the battery light came on. When I was driving back home all my gauges died at the same time my car started to stutter. I dropped it off at a mechanic. I'm trying to do some research and see if I damaged the engine by causing the car to overheat. Anyone have any say on how much my car is screwed? Should I be looking into buying a new car? Also, I coming from practically no knowledge of cars. Any advice or input is welcome.

Thank you
