Engine tick
Hi everyone,
I inherited a 2007 endeavor recently and I’m trying to figure out an engine issue. 200000km, history is foggy, misfire on cyl 5 among other problems. New oil as of 2 months ago. 2 different mechanics are recommending a new engine. Video is taken when the engine is warm. Upon startup it hiccups a bit with a thump sound until the rpm’s drop to normal idle. Car pulls fine and gas mileage seems accurate. Wondering if this sound rings any bells that we might explore before sourcing a new engine. Thanks in advance

Hi. First thing I would do is a little history of maintenance; Has car had a 'Tune up', plugs, air filter? > The fact only #5 is mis-firing usuallyindicates a bad ignition coil.
If not attend to these.
Has oil and filter been changed regularly? If not, the 'variable valve timing' solenoid / oil screen could be clogged..
When was a Timing belt service been performed? "Critical"! > Interference engine.
"Other" problems" ? Didn't reveal.
Best. Jeff

Hi Jeff, thanks for the notes. I’m going to go through the paperwork to see what has been done but at this point I would guess the plugs and ignition coils are original, timing belt is original, air filter is probably original. I changed the oil and transmission fluids and had some Suspension work done. There are some o2 sensor faults (pre/post cat) as well as general electrical catch all codes. The other stuff I mentioned is minor stuff I can live with for now. I think I’m really trying to gauge whether the cost of all the things you mentioned would be worth doing as opposed to an engine replacement.
Hi. The items I mentioned are normal maintenance items, things you would/should do ,especially on an unknown engine...
This is a cost to all owners.
So, do the initial tune and go from there. Am I to assume that a mechanic would be doping these, as opposed to yourself?
Then, it can be costly. Try to find a reputable mechanic that knows of these. Kind of hard ,since there aren't many Mitsus around,I know.
They aren't that hard to work on, if you have any mechanical skills. Tutorials, etc. abound.
Best,Jeff
