Those are pretty contradictory statements. The Evo and the GSX both had 4g63s and similar drivetrains (at least the 90s Evos) and suffered from many of the same problems. The early 7bolt 4g63s had some crank walk but it was fixed. The tranny wasn't particularly strong but it was adequate for the cars. The TC was the real bitch because it leaked (often times little by little so you wouldn't really see the marks or droplets on the ground) and eventually the TC would run dry and lock up.

Otherwise I don't know of a lot of problems with them. Just check your fluid levels on your TC every few weeks to make sure you're okay, or put a white mat/towel under the car and if its stained you'll know you have to replace the seals on your TC.
