Default transmission or clutch?

I recently bought a used 03 Evo and recenlty I noticed that when I shift into 3rd at high rpm's it grinds a lot. I have been told it could be the clutch or the transmission. Has anyone else had this problem? I have 51,000 miles on the car and I don't want to bring it somewhere and have them tell me it is the something wrong that isn't... Any info you can give me would be great! Thank you
Jay

Are you still on the stock clutch? Do you know how the previous owner drove the car? The EVO 8 tranny's are known to be a weak link, espeically if at high RPM shifts and if the car is modded putting more power thru the tranny. Mine is being upgraded as we speak. I would suggest a tranny rebuild/upgrade and do the clutch while the tranny is out. That will save you any additional labor. Just my 2 cents.

^^^ I agree with FOG.
The trannys in all the Evos VIII and IX are known to grid here an there I think it all depends on 1) the mods you got done and amoun of power and 2) the driver abusing the car

FOGs car was doing exactly what your car is doing except he has a aftermarlet clutch and only 5600 miles on the car his would happen at shifts over 8000RPMs he also was almost 500HP with a 50trim and a TTrix 2.3L built motor. and his problem was the tranny itself
