yeah in 4G63 DSMs maybe... not this engine

 

Hey guys, I'm new here as well. Obviously, my '99 Galant has the same problem as JeffGolem's 2002 with 113k mi on it. My buddy works at one of those private collision centers; after he heard that sound, he said I have one of the lifters went bad. Oh well, tomorrow I'm taking it to my mechanic to have it checked and maybe fixed. I'll keep y'all updated on this. And yeah, HAPPY THANKSGIVING MITSUBISHI LOVERS!

 

I'm scheduled to take the Galant in next week to the dealer.

By the way, I took some video with sound and I'm having trouble uploading it to this site so you can hear the noise too. If i get it figured out I'll post the audio of the problem.

Ironically, we purchased the extended bumber to bumber warranty up to 100K. At 98K I brought the car into the dealer and complained about this same sound. They said it was fine "normal engine noise" Now at around 110K it is still there and even louder. I knew it was not normal engine noise and I should have pushed the dealer harder but I'm so busy these days. I feel like the dealer owes me something...

I'll keep you all updated as to what the noise is.

Dude thats just lifters man.

You can try an oil additive that helps soffen them but the only real way to fix it is to get them changed. It wont harm your engine at all.

 

If it is just the lifters, they have gotten progressively louder over the last 20-30K miles. Will they just keep getting louder? What will eventually happen?

What do the additives do to the engine to quite the lifters?

The lifters may get louder... they may not and nothing will happen. Do they still tick in hot weather?

The additive wont do anything to the engine... just stop the lifters ticking.

 

The engine makes that sound year round only after the engine is warmed up and the RPM's have dropped below 1000.

Do you have a suggestion for which additive works the best to quiet noisy lifters?

 

no i dont know the names of them. Ask at autozone whats best for tapping lifters.
