RE: Engine knocking/tapping noise at idle!!!
Well, the 2nd Mitsubishi dealership called on Friday to say that they did not get a real good chance to listen to the engine due to chaos from the snow storm that hit us. They asked to keep it over the weekend to try again on Monday.
The saga continues...

Thats bull**** all for damn lifter tick. Dude if the engine had a rod knock or a spun bearing it would be dead by now... it would be dead after like a couple miles. So i highly doubt its anything major. You need to change that timing belt and tensioner though... that can get messy if that belt breaks.. its recomended that you change the belt every 60k... you have a crap load more than that.

Sebba,
I finally got my Galant back today. Actually the car is my wifes, but I call it mine because I take care of all the maintenance on it...so that makes it mine right?
Anyway, I wanted to thank you for all of your feedback and suggestions and most of all your concern. Here is what they replaced...Timing belt, tensioner and cam belt. Total with tax was $560. The first dealership wanted $625 without tax, so at least I saved a few bucks there.
The clattering noise is gone now. I guess that fixed the problem. With the engine quiet now, I can hear slight lifter noise which is minor and totally acceptable. I spoke to the mechanic and he said that he now only hears slight hydraulic lash noise but according to him it is normal and actually sounds better than cars with less mileage.
For some reason I had it in my mind that the timing belt did not need to be changed until around 100K miles and not 60K. I learned my lesson on this one.
Thanks again for all your help!!! We are keeping the car and now going for 200,000 miles with it!!!!!!!!!
