Yes, it is a separate light bulb. This is fairly common since the "D" bulb is used the most often.

I do not know the part no. Just go in and take the light from gear no 1 and put it in the D spot.[8D]

Good idea!

I got a handful spare bulbs from the local scrap merchant for next to nothing.

The cluster comes out easily, give it a go.

Just had the 4wd and the ABS lights fixed on the transmission, They were flashing and there were switches replaced that sit on the transmission. Now I notice after the work that my "D" light does not light up. Is this too a bulb problem or could they (dealer) screwed up somthing up?

My wife's Montero has the same problem. The D light and the light representing rear pass. wheel are both out. What do I need to remove to get access to this area?

Year & Model of vehicle might be helpful...

I suspect however the guage cluster will need to be disassembled to some degree. Shouldn't be too hard. Not too many moving parts there that you will disassemble.
