1989 Montero W/ 3.0 V6
Hello Everyone- I scored a rebuilt 3.0 v6. It was sitting on a shop shelf for the past 20 years....
Installed new Water Pump, Oil Pump, and getting reading to install the timing belt. I turned the crank a smidge to TDC. Now I need to turn the cams to the timing mark. BUT before I do, need your help to confirm something.
So as not to damage anything, would I simply loosen the rocker arms - and rotate the cam - then retorque rocker arms? Repeat on the opposite side? Then install the distributor pointed at Cly #1?
Appreciate the advice.

Back to the OP: I don't think it's necessary with these. Just turn the crank slowly, and don't force anything.
Seems to me that if he is rotating by hand, he would notice any interference and just stop turning the crank. If valves do contact piston and "stop" the movement, then he would know to loosen the camshaft at that point.........and see if that allows enough room.
Yep. That happens. Those 1st Gen V6's are easy to diagnose once you are around them for a minute
