The Chilton manual implies that you have to take the transmission out of the 90 Montero before you can pull the 3.0 liter V6.

That seems excessively labor intensive to me. I have pulled domestic engines without pulling the tranny.

Question: Can you pull the engine with out all the extra work associated with pulling te drive line?

Not sure w/ the 90 but I suspect so. I pulled the engine on a 95SR and it was far easier to pull w/ the tranny than w/out the tranny. Re-installing it and getting the tranny and engine to mate underneath the body was very difficult and an excercise in frustration.

You found it easier to pull the engine and tranny as a package. Do I understand you correctly?

I don't recall all the details since this was over a year ago. We removed the 3.5L DOHC engine from a 95SR Montero. We used an engine hoist (a cheap one from harbor freight) and pulled the engine, tranny and transfer case out all at once rather than individually.

The other time we pulled them separately and it was horribly difficult to re-allign the tranny with the engine underneath.

You'll want to remove the radiator when you do this and simply lift and pull the entire assembly out (carefully).

you do not, nor should you pull the trans out with the engine if all you're trying to do is pull the engine.
thats a rediculously silly added amount of labor.
you can easily remove the engine without doing that.

 

I have the engine out and here is how it was done.

Once the motor mounts were unbolted I lowered the transmission and transer case with floor jacks and moved the engine, transmission / transfer case forward a couple inches to give me firewall clearance to reach in and undo the bellhouse fasteners. The I put the chain on the engine lift points and lifted slightly and pulled forward and slid the engine and converter out of the bell housing. Then it was just a matter of lifting the engine with converter attached with the engine lift.

We'll see whether I have any issues going back in. Stay tuned.
