1995 Montero LS 3.0 engine whine follows revving, getting louder
the whine sound mechanical. has been there as long as I can remember, at least 5 years, but has recently gotten quite a bit louder - when I accelerate to pass someone I sound like an F1 racer, like a turbo is kicking in) and after revving with the hood open it is starting to sound like loose bearings or something. It's not the transmission, not the power steering pump, don't think it's the ac (recently rebuilt, no change in noise from before or after) or the water pump (recently replaced). doing the wrench to the ear trick it sounds like maybe it's from behind the fan sprocket, maybe the timing chain getting loose?
any ideas? I'm in Costa Rica, this is one of those problems that they never seem to have the skill to diagnose until it totally breaks. That can be bad or nothing much, but taking that chance is tough.
thanks in advance.
