Sounds like a plan.

Wish someone with a Montero Sport wiring diagram would chime in with ignition switch wiring info. On my full size that suspect wire (ign+inst panel+ turn sig) is Black/White. Make sure the "dead" black/yellow contact you found is not the start connection. That terminal would only have 12v when the key was all the way over in start position and would otherwise seem dead. Hopefully you checked for that and if that Black/Yellow terminal is dead in all positions, including start, then the new switch is definitely the way to go.

well finally got home to work on it. Its not the switch as far as I can tell, the dead wire was the starter wire and became hot when turned to start position so back to square one. I did read on net where it says if the crank position sensor goes bad, it should revert to the cam position sensor to start and run, trying to figure out how to check both of them without removing them as they are a pain to remove being on front of motor behind timing gear cover. anyone got any other suggestions I would love to hear them.

 

Think I have narrowed it down to the alarm system, now I am trying to figure out if I can run it without the alarm installed.

 

It was the alarm system. I removed it and reconnected the ignition wire back together (black with white stripe) that they had cut and ran through the alarm and it cranked right up and runs great now. If anyone else runs into this problem, this is most likely the solution, at least it is the best place to start first. It was a headache for me to figure out and find but was a simple and easy fix and since I already had the connectors and black tape, it didn't cost me a penny to fix, just a lot of time to find and figure it out (and pulling my hair out with frustration). LOL.
