2000 montero Sport I think timing??..
Hi, I am very new here but this is the problem i am having.
Montero when I put key in and try to start it goes R r r r r. But won't turn over.
I have checked all the fuses and electrical connections and everything is good there.
I have no gas smell coming from exhaust and it seems as if it is sucking in air not pushing out exhaust.
I have checked for spark and thats all good. Gas is getting to the cylinders but not getting out.
my friend took the cover off the timing belt and it looks old still tight but kind crackle looking.
we tried putting gas in the Intake but still wouldnt start.
what suggestions do you gentlemen have for me. This is my only transpo so cant afford to have it down much longer.

We had just a few hour previously gotten home from driving from Tacoma, wa to Eastern washington about 250 miles and I hadn't had problem one. It wS majorly low on gas when he took it but not out when it stopped.
I would ask him what happened before the car stopped, but after he got out of the car to walk home he was struck and killed by a hit and run driver.
That is terrible. So sorry.
Timing belt issue is definitely a possibility if this symptom cames on very suddenly - running OK, then nothing. It is hard to check timing without getting all the covers off. You can open upper covers and have a helper turn over the engine to see if everything spins. Additionally you should at the very least check both upper timing marks.
Where in Easter WA are you located? You can PM me on this forum.

This sounds almost exactly like what happened to my monty. The previous owner said all was fine until he got on an onramp and floored it. I found it in a mechanics scrap yard, the owner didn't want to fix it so he sold it to me for $600. Whomever did the timing belt job did not tighten down the eccentric tensioner arm good enough and it wiggled loose and jumped time, bending the valves. Not saying this is exactly what happened with yours but it sounds strikingly familiar. Had to deck a new set of heads, replace all timing components, water pump, head gaskets, and valve cover gaskets. Surprisingly, that was the only damage in my case.

I had taken the cover kinda off the timing belt but wasnt really sure about what i wS looking at except that the belt looked crackley but I didn't know where the marks were and didn't want to screw anything up urther so I buttoned it back up.
I need to get a manual for it one that will show me exactly what i am looking for. Out here in the boonies I ll be trying to figure this put myself for the most part besides what you gentlemen provide me.
thanks for whatever help you can assist with. much appreciTed.
You are out in the boonies... Unfortunately Lind doesn't have many mechanics. I think the closest mechanics who might be able to work on your Monty would be in Ritzville, Moses Lake or Othello. You need to get on the phone and and see who is available and which ones of them are able/willing to work your car. These days some mechanics just like to do regular maintenance and not repairs. Once you figure out who can work on it, Monty will need to be towed there. Is your coolant is filled with proper antifreeze mix or is it just water? If it is antifreeze, I would not worry about it being cold.
Are you able to take a photo of the "crackly" timing belt and post it here?

Did you check for fuel pressure? My old [2002] Monty might need a new pump/regulator because if I don't change the filter often, it doesn't start well.
Did you check spark? I had to replace the ignition module on mine a while back.
