Default 2001 limited clutch engagement problem

Hello all,
2001 Montero Limited and it starts and runs great. After sitting a while, sometimes if you push the accelerator, the engine revs but no forward movement at all. After two or three revs, 1st finally engages and the car launches at whatever rpms you happen to be sitting at. I had just rev'd it a little in a car lot and almost took out the car just ahead of me. After that the car ran great. This has happened about a half dozen times over the last 10 weeks or so. I checked the tranny oil level and it was a bit over full.
Any ideas before letting a garage try and diagnose a problem I doubt I can duplicate in front of them?

Sounds like a transmission or torque converter issue. Sorry

I went to the dealer today and was told the same thing. He said it was likely the torque converter as well. He said I'm looking at a new or rebuilt transmission, whether it is the converter or the tranny itself. He said there is no "good" scenario here. quoted me $3500 for used installed and $5000 for a new installed. does this seem reasonable? Holy cow, tough pill to swallow.

Unfortunately that is what the cost of transmissions. Have you tried to check with an independent shop to see if you can get a better price especially on a rebuilt transmission.

You may have a problem due to the transmission fluid you used. You absolutely have to use genuine Mitsubishi Diaqueen/ SPIII fluid. There are many posts on this all over the web. You may want to re do the transmission flush and see how the transmission works if it is not already ruined.
