Mitsubishi Montero & Montero SportThis sport utility vehicle offers more size than the other Mitsubishi SUVs, but manages to keep a sporty look and comfortable feel, unlike many larger SUVs.
I learned soooooo much about a new to me Montero Sport with the 3.5 reading through this post. It should be a sticky!
Sorry to hear about your problems.
sjeff35 - thank you. I am glad my thread helped you out. Never had a sticky thread before. I know this thread has the most views and most replies by quite a wide margin.
After listing it on Craigslist for 2+ weeks and dealing with all the idiots, we donated the Montero Sport to Melwood, a charitable organization where its proceeds will be put to good use https://www.melwood.org/about
Vehicle was picked up yesterday and so the long saga has ended. It actually drove up the rolloff under its own power and surprisingly sounded not too bad.
My daughter now drives my 2012 Ford Focus which has almost 215k on it (I bought it new, and yes I drive a lot for my job managing construction of new homes). I now drive a new 2019 Ford Escape.

While cleaning out the vehicle, I found the Mitsubishi insignia that used to be on the rear hatch. It had fallen off years ago and road around in the glove box. I decided to stick it on my garage beer fridge along with the timing belt sticker that I never filled out.
Larry...….Howdy "neighbor". I did not realize that you lived in Warrenton.....I am only 45 min away in Culpeper. Wish I had known you were selling your Mitsy, and I could have driven up and met you in person, and maybe bought it from you. But Im sure it will end up in the hands of someone who can make good use of it. You will have to go out and find another one to tinker on so you can keep inputing great information to this site.
See ya......Dwight Studebaker
Don't spray seals with brake cleaner, that will ruin them (and probably why it started leaking from everywhere after that step). Up until then it was likely just a valve cover gasket. They will leak all over the engine like you saw, the moving engine parts distribute the oil so it looks like its coming from everywhere. The covers themselves are not well made and mine leaks ever so slightly even after I put in a new gasket.
This is an awesome thread!!! thank you! I do have a question... after you rebuild the engine, does the head bolts needs to be re-tighten? or they stay until next rebuild? thank you!
