Default 2002 Montero XLS Starting issues

Hello all,
My 2002, 198K miles has recently developed some cold start issues. Until a few weeks ago, it ALWAYS started first try. Recently, it has been hard to start (usually 2 or 3 tries) and has had to "warm up." Idlilng very roughly and sometimes having to restart again if it dies. After about 30 seconds, it is awesome. It reminds me of auto choke issues in pre-fuel injection motors.

We've check the codes, nothing showing up. Cleaned the throttle body, traced the lines and switched out everything up to the fuel pump, no difference. Fuel pump is going to run about $500, and there is no guarantee that this was the problem.

The fuel pump actually doesn't kick on until several tries, but then runs perfectly, with normal pressure. Never had this problem on a Mitsu before (this one makes the 5th), so I have no idea as to whether or not this is normal for a Mitsu. I wouldn't think so, but... I don't mind having to warm up a 14 year old beauty like this one, I just don't want it to progress and leave me stranded somewhere.

Any ideas?
Michele

When the fuel pump "doesn't kick on until several tries", does it get energized (getting 12v at the pump) from the first try? If so - it is internal issue with the fuel pump and you have to replace it eventually. If there is no voltage coming to the pump for first few tries, you need to trace upstream to figure out why not. In this case it can be related to some sensor issue or other electronics.

I think you answered my question, but we have been checking the psi.... The fuel pump only gives about 35 psi on the first crank. Honestly it is acting like an old school diesel or auto choke. Once I get it "warmed up" (after several starts and time to get "primed") it runs like a Mitsu always does. After it "warms up" it gets 50+ psi in the pump and I passed a hemi today. Waste of good engine....

When was the last time you replaced your fuel filter?
