My 2003 Montero Sport rattles most of the time when I accelerate. It doesn't matter if the engineis cold or warm.
Any ideas on how to pinpoint and fix this problem?

Describe the rattle a bit more...is it at a certain RPM, inside the car, in the engine bay, under the car?

One of the brackets holding the exhaust pipe right before the bend from the engine to the rear worked it's way loose. A simple turn of the wrench fixed it.

 

This sounds silly, but check your oil. My Montero's lifters start rattling if it getshalf a quart low.

 

Does it do it only when the AC is on? because mine rattles when the AC is on but i think it might be the fan.

 

Could be the cat

 

mine is doing it aswell. but mine is a 98' Monero Sport. it's really only when im ideling and up to about 5mph it laggs a bit. i dont know if that's the rattling your talking about. but im really desperate to find out what it is because it's annoying the hell out of me to know theres something wroing with my monty lol.

 

if u use those large offset wheels, u can try to get it properly ballanced.
but its hard to pin point it bcoz u did not describe the vibration in more detail.
could be lots of things such as mountings etc..

 

is your long shaft in good condition?
how about the coupling?

 

lol damn. i found my problem. as i was driving in the morning. i had noticed out of no where and hearing a couple noises. my power stearing was gone. so i was thinkin "no problem, probably just needs fluid". so i put some fluid in it, and took it around the block noticing my power stearing was not enabled. i drove for about 15ft, and bing bang boom. my crank pulley falls off lol. i looked under my car and all i see are a my power stearing belt, along with my fan belt hanging.
my bolt had snapped earlier and i suppose my pulley was just barely setting there. the bolt had snapped off inside my crank. so that means fun for me this weekend.

btw. 98' Montero Sport owners: be sure that when you got your vehicle that the damn bolt was torqued down to specs. they had a recall on 210,000 98' Monteros
