2003 Montero Sport Transfer Case Problem
The transfer case problem is still lingering. Presently the noise is louder than it was before i replaced it with a used one. Now the used one, as i found out, failed. The dealer will charge me arm and leg to install a new TC. And they will not install a re-manufactured one if it must be warrantied. The bottom line is i have changed T/C twice with used ones of about the same mileage but they all failed. And buying another used one without knowing if it was tested could result in the same problem after maybe 5-10K miles. I have a new mechanic now who promised to fix it for me if i can find a used one that was tested and with warranty.
The problem with the TC is that it failed and when it did, i never got a TM or TC warning signal. After running around several mechanics without success in figuring out why i hear grinding noise from my car, i was ask to see a Transmission Mechanic. When i did, his diagnostic was a failed TC. He was the person who suggested i get another TC but a new one would costs much more. I agreed to fix it. And it worked fine. After about 1k mile, it failed and i took it back to him. He told me that it must have failed because of the tires which he said were different sets and unbalanced tires could cause malfunction of the TC that i should replace the ties. I did as suggested and replaced all four tires with the same type and size of ties. He went ahead and bought and replaced my TC with out charging me. few months later, the same problem came back. I could not drive with normal ALL wheel drive gear but with 4H or 4L. So i researched the net to see if anyone has posted a case of this nature and to learn what action was taken to resolve it. that is when i found this site and posted my frustration about the Monty TC.
So what you are saying here is that you have been driving with different tires???
I hope there all the same size at least bud. That would be a big problem here and it would be like wearing a shoe on one foot and a high heel on the other foot. lol

I drove my car with those tires long before the TC failed but the mechanic after installing the used T/C that failed, i was not happy so i took it back to him. He told me that the T/C failed because the tires are not the same. And that he should have checked it before doing the work in the first place. So i proceeded with changing all four tires. The three months after changing the tires and redoing the work, the TC still failed.
I'm still not clear on what exactly failed in the your transfer case. You keep saying that two of your transfer cases had failed. Well... what failed? You cant shift into 4H? Why? Is is a switch indicator that is not working of a a gear stripped inside? Is it a linkage problem that gets worth over time? Did your mechanic even took the old TC apart to see what caused it not to work? The chances of two transfer cases failing within such a short time are very very small, unless you put them through incredible abuse. Plus, there are different degrees of "fail". Yes engines, transmissions, transfer cases and differentials fail, but the fix can be a simple a part replacement and not a whole engine swap.

I've read that if your center differential lock light is blinking, you can read it off like an engine code. Is your light blinking? Here is some more info on the system in case anyone would like to read into it.
