Default 94 Montero 3.0 - vibration

I have a 94 Montero. I was checking to see if the 4wheel drive was operational and since then I have a vibration when going speeds of 50 - 60 mph. The vibration stops after I go over 60 mph. The steering wheel or car does not shake, I only have the vibration. I am a single mom with 3 school aged kids, any advise would be appreciated! Thanks!

Your driveshaft may be out of balance, or the carrier bearing may be out.

Thanks Sebba for your reply. Is this something that is hard to do or is it costly?

Nope! Keep in mind that I could still be wrong. The driveshaft is usually held in with 4 bolts at either end, and should slide out. If you have a mechanically inclined friend that you can bribe, utilize that. See if they can confirm my suspicions.

You cannot tell a driveshaft is out of balance just by looking at it, but you should be able to move it around some if the bearing failed. A driveshaft shop should be able to check its balance fairly easily. It could also be a U-Joint on the driveshaft too.

Does the vibration continue after you disengage 4WD?

Just so you know, those hole in the wall shops are a thousand times better than the commercially owned rip off joints. After they diagnose the vehicle, go get a second opinion too. I would take it into one of those places that offers free diagnosis, and see what they say. Be weary if they start guessing...

Thanks again Sebba. I really appreciate all your great advise & suggestions. I hope you're right and it won't cost me "an arm & leg"! I hope I can find someone in my area who will be able to fix it. I live in Hilo, HI and I can't even get Mitsubishi parts here. I always have to order online. When I previously had a problem with my Montero, 3 mechanics told me they won't touch this kind of vehicle. Thanks again!

You are so welcome, I appreciate your thanks. That's what we're here for.

Wow, that would infuriate me!

If it turns out you need a part, RockAuto usually has everything you need. If not, I may be able to source it locally here. If you covered parts cost and shipping I'd send it to you myself.

Thanks Sebba. Next time I need a part, I will surely contact you first. The company I work for also has a 95 Montero. I will also let my boss know. Thanks again!
