I just bought a 94 Montero SR and the sunroof has issues. For one it only opens a quarter of the way. It also has a bunch of tree debris (leafs and needles) in the tracks. On more thing....it leaks in the front of it. My question is, does it look like I am going to need to tear the headliner and take the sunroof out to clean it so I can find the main problem? And if so, where do I start and how do I go about this project?

 

Well you seem to be on the right track with the obvious.

You may want to see if doing the easy stuff first cures the problem.

So clear out the debris.

Relube the tracks if necessary. And weather stripping may need to be replaced. I would say removing the headliner is not necessary unless you have determined the motor or more internal issues need to be looked into which would require you to.
