Default Car buying advice needed!

Hello folks, I am considering a 2002 Montero Sport LS...the car is really clean. Like new interior, 164000 miles, full service history, transmission serviced on the 6th(6 days ago). It seems really nice, and the guy wants $2.5k for it, I will tyro to negotiate him down to $2k. So does anyone have this car? How is it? I have an old 96 LS with the same engine and I love it, so are the newer sport just as nice and reliable? Thanks

You may be looking at an overhaul on the motor but it would be a nice buy.

Why would I be looking for an overhaul? It's the same 6g72 engine as my older montero with 234k miles... That thing is serviced at a very reputed place on time so I don't think anything like that will happen...btw my older one and this one has the same engine but why does the newer one only have 165 hp vs 177 on my older one? What's the difference?

Btw on the montero sport, I see on carfax that engine was de carbonized very recently...so must be a clean engine.
