Default causes of increasing oil consumption?

Im considering a 2002 montero sport with a 3.0 w/ 180K.
i would plan on using it as a spare driver.

It gets close to 1000 miles to the quart of oil.
In the past I have read that some manufacturers, probably american) claim 1000 mi to the quart isnt considered too much.
Mitsubiti, honda and toyota probably still have higher engine standards for their cars engines than USA. My other MS gets 2000 mi w/ 220K

If there is no evidence of oil seep or drip, then the oil loss has to be out the combustion end .

i deleted the rest of the post as this link explains my question.
