Default Could running regular grade fuel on a 3.8L

I have a 2003 Montero Limited, I had been running regular fuel (to save a buck) on it and I had the Check Engine light on (can't remember the code number, but it seemingly was for the front left bank, sorry can't be more precise), anyway, I've started running premium (plus I put in a bottle of Octane booster) and the light turned off...could it be that easy???

It seems strange to me to have an expedition vehicle, a truck run in some of the worlds most remote and harsh environs, but it can only run on Premium????
