Hi,

I am new here and am thinking about buying a '91 Montero LWB LS. I am asking for opinions about the reliability and durability of these, including their off road ability. I have quite a bit of experience modifying and off roading Toyota mini trucks and I have an Isuzu Trooper. Both have reputations for having good running gear components. Are the Montero axles, steering, suspension, gears, transfer case considered stout? I know that many Jeep axles etc are really a weak point for them and I want to see if Monteros have any known issues here.

Also, the one I am looking at has about 200K mikes with a reported 20K mile engine that was installed new about 8 years ago. The interior is fairly worn and the tailgate has been pushed in but still opens and closes. It runs and drives good but would need some work to the brakes, bushings, rubber mounts, clutch. The asking price is $1,600. It would be a father/son project toy for fixing up and then my son would drive to school in a couple of years. Any thoughts on the value?

I've never owned a 2nd generation Monty, only a 3rd gen., so I can only tell you they are great vehicles for wheeling and daily drivers. However, I'm fairly sure the SR model is the best 2nd gen. for wheeling. I believe it came with a quality factory air locker, tranny and oil cooler, and can fit 33's.

The fellas on any of the below sites will be a wealth of information about the 2nd gen. Monteros. (The last one is an Australian based forum.)

Thanks for the information. I did get it after looking at it again and learning it was not as rough as I had originally thought. It is an LS but I will be looking for a rear axle from a later model SR so I can have the locker.

I should sell my '86 Montero. 173,000+ miles. It's the 3-door. Some rust. Runs fine. New tires. New gaskets. Other new parts. Work done by private mechanic. Not using it very much. I took a bunch of pictures of exterior, interior, and engine. Make an offer. It never gets stuck anywhere.

 

My '86 montero for sale with all the new parts, new tires, etc comes with the chilton's manual I bought less than a year ago. I will cry when it's sold but have to sell it. I never got stuck anywhere.
