Default New Fuel Pump and Filter?

Before we drop the tank and put a new pump and filter in my 2005 Montero Ltd, Id like a little feedback.

if I just turn the ignition to full start it will take many cranks to finally get the engine to turn over, sometimes multiple tries. If I turn the ignition switch on and just let it sit for about 25 seconds, then turn to full start, the engine will fire up fairly quick. I do hear a whirring sound during this 25 second period.

Am I destined to drop the tank....or is there an access panel in this model? Is there another fix?

Any help would be much appreciated. Love this car...it's a mountain goat...it has 97K miles. Thanks for any help.

yea sounds like its not getting enough pressure.
You could try an inline pump under the bonnet

or, is it diesel, with glowplugs on the way out, or dodgy heater circuit?

Sorry, it's a gas motor...and I dont know what a heater circuit is in a fuel system. I was thinking there may be a check valve somewhere in the system to keep it charged for quick starting....and if it's under the hood...well that would be an easier fix.

Sounds like you need diagnostics

There is a panel to access the fuel pump (which has the fuel filter in it) from inside of the vehicle. Tumble the second row seats forward. below the seats there is a metal panel. Unscrew the panel and clean the top of the tank around the pump very well. You don't want any debris falling into the tank. The fuel line is under pressure, so take care when disconnecting it...Remove all lines from the pump and carefully take the pump assembly out. Reverse the process to install the new assembly.

Thank you very much Mr. Z, that information is very helpful. Do you know if there is a check valve somewhere in the system that could be causing this problem? I would not mind purchasing a schematic of both the physical and electronic components of the fuel system if anyone has a good lead on that. Searching internet has become like visiting the tower of Babel.

Again thanks for your help.

Haynes, Chilton...no one makes an manual for the Gen. III Montero that I've been able to find in North America.

So I use an on-line FSM.

Hope it helps.
