Default Powertrain Control Module

I had the transmission rebuilt in my 2002 Montero Limited and am experiencing "shift flare" on the 2nd to 3rd shift. I now know what shift flare is after describing the problem to google, that is a delay in shifting then leading to a hard engagement sometimes.

I took it over to a Mitsubishi dealer who read a code indicating the #2 solenoid. Took it back to the transmission specialist who checked everything again including the soleniods. Could not find a physical problem.

Finally my questions. Could the PCM be at issue? Have any of you swapped one out and how do you do that? Can the PCM be refreshed/reprogrammed?

Thanks

Why not to change the #2 solenoid as transmission code indicated? Unless you have a spare PCM laying around, you will not be able to tell if this is a PCM issue or a solenoid without extensive testing. It is possible that there is an intermittent issue with the wiring harness leading to the #2 solenoid that is causing this problem.

Default Not the PCM

PCM checks out fine at the dealer. Solenoid checks out fine.
The hunt continues.

I'd start looking at wiring and connectors. It is possible that this is due to intermittent signal loss or short to ground. Crawl under the truck and visually trace the wiring looking for any chaffing of melted insulation. You can connect a voltmeter to the vehicle side plug (or back probe connector while still attached to solenoid). I believe you should have 5 volt signal there. Then start moving wires by hand and see if at any point you get a loss of signal. Unfortunately it is possible that the wiring issue may be as far as transfer case control module. Take your time and check you wiring all the way from solenoid to PCM

Default Wiring OK

Got the vehicle back from the dealer after fixing two recalls. Spent some time under the vehicle this weekend looking at the wiring to the trans and all checks out ok.

Mitsubishi tech called the symptoms into the Techline and came up with possible causes:
Overdrive clutch piston seal
Overdrive clutch piston scarred
Plates possibly installed upside down causing binding.

It's an old post but were you able to resolve the issue?
I've the same 2002 ltd with rebuilt transmission & it doesn't go into overdrive.

Couldn't resolve it. Found 80k transmission and swapped it in. We tried hard but rebuilding one of these is beyond the expertise of the transmission shops around here.
