Changing out the timing belt on my 1994 3.5L Montero. I have removed the crank pulley bolt but I cannot remove the pulley. No bolts holding the pulley. Does it come off with a gear puller? I seem to be able to pull the pulley put about 1/4" but I notice I am pulling out the timing belt gear also ( I am not sure but I thing this gear is part of the crankshaft proper ). Am I missing something?

 

u usually need a puller to pull a crank pulley off.

 

Timing belt gear is attached to the main pulley with small roll pins. May separate during removal but can be put back together before reassy. My whole assy came out in one piece without using a puller but maybe I was lucky.

I tried pretty hard with a puller and the thing didn't budge. Is it OK to heat the pulley or might I damage something about the balancer?

 

Did you remove the crank position sensor?

If you know someone that has a "Morgan knocker" its a body dent puller tool you have to be very very careful but yes it will work. I rented a puller from Auto zone a parts place in Oregon to do mine but used the Morgan knocker in the junk yard and that one came off easy. If your in the Portland Oregon, area I will let you use mine. The balancer is sometimes made with a glue as like on the Eclipse, Talons, and Lazers and if yours is don't heat it up it can seperate like they do.

 

Once I heated the crankshaft and loosened the timing belt, and allowed the crankshaft to cool, the pulley literally slid off. I had tried hard prior to this to pull the thing off with a 5 ton puller. It was a rebuilt engine, so it could have been teated with locktight or something.

Were you really trying to remove the pulley with the belt still on and tight
