Default sloopy 4wd shifter

Good day all.

I just bought a 2002 Montero Sport XLS. It has about 147500 on it. It is in great shape barring a couple of items. The item of greatest concern is the 4wd. The shifter is sloppy and I can't get it to engage at all. When I try to move it, it will move freely left and right, as well as forward and backwards. It doesn't stay where I leave it when I move it forwards and backwards though. And I don't feel any change when I move it, almost like it's not attached to anything on the other end (transfer case). I've done the basic parking lot turn test to check for chirping or catching and there's none. And it doesn't hop, skip or jump in normal driving on dry pavement. So, I'm guessing it's still in AWD mode; the 4wd is not engaged. Any information anyone has to offer about what's not working and recommendations for repairs before I take it to the shop, are appreciated.
