tire squirm/instability with taller tires
My montero sport 2001 xls 4x4 came orig w/ 255 70 x 16s
Theoretically,if you change the tire to a 265 275 285x16 ,the extra side wall height will result in noticible instability under SOME contitions due to increased flex tendencies of the sidewall.
My question is this:
just how noticible are these height increases ? The situations where this would be an issue for my wife are big side gusts of wind we get in my area. When youre doing 6omph then all of a sudden a 40 mph gust of wind from the side . My wife has been complaining for years(since it was new) about instability issues like this wind and even when theres no wind. i notice it but it doesnt bother me. Shes not a fast driver, very laidback. Since Im due for new tires i may just go back to 255s just to find out the answer.
i realize there probably arent easily accessed actual expert studies on this,so im just curious if anyone,or their wife, definately noticed a difference.

Running a an E load tire will greatly increase the lateral stability. The side wall is much stiffer. My rig came with 265/70 tire and I've bumped them up to 265/75. I wanted the same tread width, so I stuck with the 265, but since I was looking for a taller profile, I went up to a 75. A stiffer (higher load rated) tire should take care of your problem, and you can still bump up to the taller profile. Increased tire pressure also with help "stiffen" the feel.

I forgot to include:
You are correct, but I neglected to say that Im trying to balance the best of both worlds and please the wife as she drives it 99% of the time. My wife hated stiffer tires on our 4 mi RT driveway road as it was full of washboard and uneven deeply buried rocks that just made it hell even at 5 mph. So i put on less stiff wt carrying capacity tire and lowered the air pressure, but she still hates it,just not as much.
I have told her what you need then is either a cross over suv or go to a car.
Cars handle the road just likes she wants.
Unfortunately i dont think this one can be solved eitherway to please her without her changing to a softer riding and shock disapating car.
Six of one 1/2 dozen of the other
