Default What is the max diameter difference between spare tire and regular tires

Hey all,

So what is the limit in diameter difference that our outies can handle. Using the 1010tires.com caluculator, there is already a 3.13% difference between my stock (215/70/16) and the spare (155/90/16).

I am thinking of running 235/65/16. First off, do these fit a 2009 Outie with stock 215/70/16? Is the rim too narrow and is there rubbing?

Also, this makes the difference between this and the spare 3.72% in diameter.

Thoughts on this?

BTW, I know I have tons of questions so I appreciate all the input (and patience)

Cheers.

The 235/65/16 tires will fit on the 6.5 inch wide stock rims and not cause any problems. Discount tire's website shows the 235/65/16 size as an optional plus size for the Outlander. I wouldn't worry too much about the spare tire size. According to my 2008 owner's manual the Outlander will turn off 4WD to prevent any damage if all 4 tires do not match in diameter. I assume that's also true for 2009 models.

Driving on the spare will reduce your ground clearance and affect handling with the skinny tire and being lower on one side, but that's why mitsubishi tells you to not exceed 50 mph. If you're careful and stay under 50 mph the spare should be fine to get you to a shop to have the flat repaired.
