Default Using Oil

I have an 02 Montero sport with 39k miles.
Over the last 3k miles I've gone thru 3 quarts of oil. one quart every 1k miles.
There's no blue smoke coming out of the backpipe.
The car runs fine. It never used oil before.
Anyone know what might be the problem?
I have a 3.0liter gasoline engine.

Yeahcheck for leaksand do so after driving it warm for a while. I currently have a slow leak that isleaking onto my skidpate...but it doesn'tdripon the groundovernight. I have read that it could be the cam seal O-rings, but I have not taken it in as of yet.

JP, what was the culprit for you?

Its engine oil. Nothing drips into the skid pan. Will check for leaks near the tranny, if it there's none..... I guess the cam seal o rings maybe next.

Does it smoke alot during start up and after idling for a while? Have you ever had the valves done?

One of the problems with the 3.0L (SOHC or DOHC) engine is valve guide seal wear after 50-100k miles. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what your engine oil loss is from. If you do have this problem, you can R&R the valve guide seals w/out doing a valve job and it requires using either the rope through the spark plug hole trick or the LP Air the the spark plug hole trick. This involves removing the upper part of the engine to expose just the valve tops and the seals. You use the rope or LP air to keep the valve from falling into the cylinder while you remove the rockers then R&R the seals.

HTH.
