03 Outlander CV Joint Replacement

New to the forum and I appreciate anyone that may be able to help.
Father-in-law needs both CV shafts replaced. Firestone (where he takes all of his automotive issues) wants $900 to replace just one side. Said can't find the shafts anywhere except dealer.
1st question - anyone know where I can purchase them? I tried Ebay, NAPA, BAP-GEON and I'm about to call Advance and Autozone (last options). Dealer is obviously last resort.
2nd question - Has anyone ever replaced them and how difficult a job is it? I routinely work on my own stuff and recently replaced my half-shafts in my P/U and my little beater - a dodge neon.
Thanks again for reading my post. Any help would be appreciated.

While CV joints can go bad due to damaged boots, the shafts themselves are often OK and you can just replace the CV joint on either end. Have you tried to source just the Joints and have a mechanic replace just those. I've replaced the boots on other vehicles before and it often involves removing the CV joint, so they must be replaceable. I would imagine replacing the whole unit with both CV joints would be expensive.

I have not thought of that. Often, and certainly not in this case, it's easier and less expensive to just replace the entire shaft. So, I will offer that suggestion to my father-in-law. He did receive an estimate - approx. $1600 to replace both front half-shafts. Ouch.
I really want to help him out, but if you can't purchase the shafts from anyone except the dealer, I don't see there's a whole lot I can do.

Just a couple of quick questions:
How many Km on the clock?
What type of drivingt has been donein this Outtie?
Mine (03 LS) has done 245000Km, a lot of rough offroading in those kms, and no issues yet with any driveline parts.
Just curious to know why the CV's need replacing, so I can ensure that mine are still going to last....
