Default 05 Outlander died at idle now won't start

Greetings Forum,

I own a '05 Outlander 4 cyl, and the other day I was at a 4 way stop where the car engine stopped. I was able to get to a parking lot, and attempted to start the engine. After cranking it, it wouldn't click at first, but sounded as if the starter was working, once i release the key a clicking noise (4 or so clicks) followed.

Yesterday I pulled the 1st cyl ignition coil and spark plug, and attempted to see a spark, i placed the coil and plug on the engine block hoping that would create a spark, I didn't see any. So I checked the 2nd cyl ignition coil and plug same way, and again no spark. Did i do this test wrong?

So my battery had 12v on it, but I am now lost on the next step or problem.

Thoughts?

Thank you for your help and time.

Robert

removing the spark plug and touching it against the block should produce a spark on a plug and is a great way to test if you have spark.

I'm assuming the starter wasn't working at first, but now it does?

have you poked around and checked some of your grounding points? Make sure all the cables are in good condition (continuity check between bolting points...battery to frame)?

Well not sure if the starter is working. I wish I could produce the sound I heard into words. I would turn the key as if I were starting, and a sound of trying to start the engine is what I best can describe it as. There was no clicking at the beginning of the key turn, just sounded as if I were starting it up regularly.

I will take a look at the grounding points this afternoon and get a map of where they are at too.

Thank you for the ideas!

Robert

Have the battery load tested, then if good, make sure the cable connections are good.

Fully charge battery and try to start, if you still get clicking, have the starter tested. If it starts, check the voltage accross the battery terminals while running- should have 13.5+ volts. If 12 or less, have alternator tested.

Hope this helps.

If the engine is turning over when you turn the key...your starter is working.

If you hear a rapid clicking and the engine is not turning over...then your starter may not be getting enough juice. That could be a weak battery or a bad power connection. If the battery is the original...i'd definitely get it tested. We just replaced ours a few months ago.

So yesterday I got a diagnostic tester, and it came up with the code P0340 which was the camshaft position sensor. So I went ahead and replaced it, and again it would not start, ugh!

Going to try a few of the original tests again. Thoughts on P0340 code, have you ever got it before?

Thanks,

Robert
