Crush washers are meant to be changed each time and you need to orient them the right way. I know some folks don't feel the need to change them each time because they haven't had them leak on them - yet. Brass washers also do a great job and you won't need to worry about orientation.

Another tip - if your drain plug leaks the first time (regardless if the washer has been changed or not), DO NOT try and tighten the plug some more -all you are asking for is trouble with a stripped plug and then you will really be pissed. Change the washer and retighten.

Anyway, this is my experience - YMMV.

 

Well when I put in drain plugs I never tightened them like im superman. So I went back down to giver it some more love and it kept leaking. I would never crank on a drain plug. Most of the time the oil pan is aluminum and will strip quick.

 

I have a concern, it states to put thefront oftheoutie on ramps and leave it there to drain the oil, wouldnt all the oil run to the back of the pan and engine causing it not to fully drain out of the oil pathways of the engine.

I did notice that he mentioned that he put almost 5qts in so that doesnt really support my concern. But I wonder if it hadnt stayed in the engine and didnt run down fast enough when it was level.

 

Interesting question B, I always get the front on ramps and leave the back lower, I would think the engine passage ways would have more than one route to the drain pan, in case the front is higher than the back.

 

The drain pan and plug are on the back of the block so with the front lifted up you will remove the most oil you can, with out running the car, butyou shouldnt do that, (people do this to chage oil without removing the plug, not a good idea) The K&N oil filter make it alot more easy to change the filter due to the fitting on he end of the filter, and its 5 times better then the stock filter.....

 

So what your saying is that some people have actually ran their cars while it was being drained?? sorry maube I misunderstood, but if thats true, what were they thinking?!?!?!
